Julian Allerton

Writer and archival consultant Julian Allerton’s work explores memory, identity, and the spaces between truth and reconstruction. His debut book, Fogbank, is a formally restrained portrait of a man without memory. The book assembles a life from behavior, gesture, and silence more than from memory itself.

What happens when you can’t remember your life?

Blake Rowans came up through the turbulent 1960s and '70s in a dysfunctional but fiercely creative Southern California family. Crime and predation fractured what the steadfast women held together after the men vanished. He found refuge in creation: early computers, animation in Hollywood's shadow, the early thrash metal scene, and the first wave of web design.

Addiction followed. Blackouts erased what memory couldn't store. Years into recovery, Blake learned his past hadn't slipped away: his brain had never recorded it. By the 2010s, researchers identified a neurodivergent condition that explained what a lifetime couldn't: his life exists as documentation, not recollection.

Fogbank reconstructs consciousness without continuity through artifacts, interviews, and observation: how a life persists without memory.
